Smoke Control Area Consultation

We are consulting on introducing a smoke control area in Welwyn Hatfield between Monday 3 November to Sunday 14 December.

A smoke control area is a designated zone where:

  • you cannot release smoke from a chimney
  • you can only burn authorised fuel, unless you use an appliance approved by Defra (also known as an ‘exempt appliance’ or ‘Defra approved appliance’)

The survey is open to anyone who lives, works, studies, or visits the area. Your views will help shape decisions about whether a smoke control area is suitable for your community.

Background

Welwyn Garden City was founded as part of the Garden City movement, designed to offer clean air, green spaces, and healthier living environments.

Today, maintaining that vision means tackling modern challenges such as air pollution from domestic burning.

Exposure to smoke and air pollution can lead to serious health issues, including asthma, heart disease, and lung conditions.

Children, older adults, and people with existing health conditions are especially vulnerable.
