Planned tree maintenance work on Valley Road, Welwyn Garden City
Essential woodland management works will be taking place at Valley Road Plantation, behind Attimore Road.
The works are scheduled to begin on 27 October 2025 and are expected to last two weeks.
We understand that tree felling can sometimes be concerning to local communities, but please be assured that these measures are essential for safety, long-term woodland health, and biodiversity. The new planting will ensure the woodland remains an attractive and sustainable space for generations to come.
Why these works are required
The works are being carried out to ensure public safety and to protect nearby properties in response to the declining condition of some of the trees.
Over recent years, the woodland has been affected by environmental stressors such as prolonged drought and tree diseases, including ash dieback. As a result, some trees have become weakened and now pose a potential risk. To address this, we will be removing the most affected trees - those that present the greatest safety concern.
The works are being delivered under a Forestry Commission Felling Licence, which confirms that the works meet national standards for sustainable woodland management. The licence also includes a requirement to replant the area following the felling.
If you would like to view the felling licence, visit the Forestry Commission’s online register. Once you have opened the map select the map layers tab, then 'Obligations on the land' and turn on 'Felling licences (Post May 2018)'. You can then search by area, the application reference is 017/2718/2024.
Please be assured that healthy trees will remain untouched and will continue to provide environmental benefits, including valuable screening from the A1(M).
Access whilst works take place
Whilst the works are taking place, access to the woodland will be restricted, and you may notice temporary disruption to footpaths and increased noise while the work is underway. We appreciate your patience and understanding while these important safety measures are carried out.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation while these important works take place.
Replanting
The woodland will be replanted during the 2025/26 season with a diverse mix of species selected for their resilience to dry conditions and resistance to pests and disease. These will include:
- 20% wild service tree
- 20% pedunculate/common oak
- 20% hornbeam
- 20% field maple
- 20% coast redwood
This new planting will help ensure the long-term health, biodiversity, and beauty of the woodland, creating a more resilient and sustainable environment for future generations.
