Staying safe in your home

Asbestos safety

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre that was used in building materials before the year 2000.

Some council properties may contain asbestos but as long as it’s in good condition and not disturbed, it does not pose a danger to residents.

Asbestos is common in materials such as some floor tiles and Aertex ceilings so it’s important you let us know if you are planning to do any DIY or make any alterations to your home. You can do this using the form on our website.

How you can help

  • Do not drill holes, saw, sand, or scrape any material that you think could contain asbestos.
  • Do not try to remove it yourself. Only trained contractors can remove asbestos. Tenants and leaseholders must tell us if asbestos is being removed.
  • Please allow access if we need to carry out an asbestos survey in your property.
  • Report any suspected asbestos damage to the Housing Maintenance Team immediately on 0800 111 4484.
