Fixed penalty notices for dropping cigarette butts or chewing gum

Littering is an offence and we issue on-the-spot fines (Fixed Penalty Notices) to people seen littering.

This includes dropping cigarette butts and other associated materials, or chewing gum.

The offence is dropping litter and walking away so you may still be fined even if you volunteer to pick up your litter afterwards.

Placing a cigarette butt down a drain or in a stream is also an offence.

Cigarette butts must be either:

  • completely extinguished on the stubbing plate and placed in a bin
  • taken home and disposed of appropriately.
