Tenant Management Organisations (TMOs)
A TMO can allow tenants and leaseholders to collectively take on the responsibility for managing the area or block they live in. The council would continue to own the property and tenants would keep their existing tenancies.
In some ways, managing a TMO is similar to running a small business, with the TMO members responsible for issues such as:
- day-to-day repairs
- grounds maintenance
- cleaning
- collecting rents
A TMO can choose how much of the day-to-day housing management it would like to take over from the council, although there are certain criteria that must be met. This includes things like holding a vote and giving the council formal notification of the proposed intentions.
For further information about setting up a TMO and other housing management options, see the government guidance on tenant management organisations.
