Policy Statement
3.1 Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is committed to ensuring tenancies are used appropriately, properties are maintained to a good standard, and tenants receive the support they need to sustain their homes. This policy sets out a structured approach to auditing tenancies across general needs and sheltered housing schemes. Through regular and targeted audits, the Council aims to verify occupancy, prevent tenancy fraud, identify safeguarding and support needs, and maintain accurate tenancy records.
3.2 In addition to ensuring homes are safe, well maintained, and lawfully occupied, the Council sees tenancy audits as a key opportunity to listen to tenants, understand their experiences, and identify issues that may not have been reported.
3.3 This tenant centred approach supports improved satisfaction, better communication, and a stronger partnership between the Council and its residents.
3.4 The policy aligns with national regulatory standards, including the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023, the Tenancy Standard (2024), and Awaab’s Law. Audits will be conducted fairly, respectfully, and in a person-centred manner, with outcomes used to inform service improvements and ensure joined-up support for residents.
